THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGAGEMENT

“When employees are engaged, they like their jobs, they work hard at their jobs, they take initiative, and they show loyalty.”

Dr Robert Hogan

Engagement in the workforce is nothing new. Ensuring that employees stay engaged with their work and are positive, contributing members of the team is a common challenge that HR managers and team leaders face.

As Dr Robert Hogan has said, “When employees are engaged, they like their jobs, they work hard at their jobs, they take initiative, and they show loyalty”. These staff members are your biggest advocates and will actively seek to promote your company. On the other hand, disengaged employees are likely to make excuses for mistakes, lack discretionary effort, be ok with “good enough”, and complain about your company.

While managers and leaders can actively see the effects of engaged employees compared to disengaged employees on the business as a whole, is enough being done to manage them?

As your employees are a reflection of your company, it’s important to ensure that employee engagement is high. An engaged workforce has a flow-on effect to your customers and is more likely to lead to favourable business outcomes.

In order to assess and manage employee engagement, we utilise diagnostics to create informed engagement programs at both the individual and the organisational level. These diagnostics support our clients in understanding the level of engagement of their employees, through benchmarking their scores against other organisations and prioritising areas for improvement, and building action plans to address these areas.

One solution that we offer to measure engagement is the Hogan 360.

“Research shows managers’ behaviour predicts employee engagement; and employee engagement predicts business unit performance. The best way to evaluate managers’ behaviour is with a proper 360 feedback process, and the PBC 360 process is one of the very best.”

Dr Robert Hogan

The Hogan 360, powered by PBC, is a comprehensive multi-rater feedback tool designed to help leaders at any level of an organisation understand how their peers, managers, direct reports and any other significant stakeholders view their performance.

Aligned with Hogan’s core assessments, the Hogan 360 uses an easy-to-interpret leadership framework to provide a real-time look at an individual’s attitude, behaviour and performance. The report offers constructive feedback around leadership expectations and sets priorities for improvement.

The Hogan 360 is a repeatable tool to allow for a continuous improvement journey. Hogan 360 data can be compared to previous results to measure ROI.

PBC believes that it is important for organisations to understand the level of engagement their employees have with their business through use of diagnostic measures. These diagnostics provide a starting point from which organisations can build targeted action plans to address and identify areas requiring improvement. Find out more about the Hogan 360 here.

Studies consistently show that when engaged with the organisation, employees work more efficiently, are less likely to leave their jobs, and more likely to take pride in their work and that of their company.

“Engagement is the best diagnostic measure of an organisation’s wellbeing and potential.”
